Sukawa Onsen is a hot spring resort located on the prefectural border of Akita and Iwate prefectures, in Mt. Located along the Nigo Oyu Line (Kurikoma Road), the beautiful lake covered with beech forest is also called “Akane numa (vermilion tarn)”. Because of the high acidity of pH 3.2 – 3.6, it is said that there are no fish in the lake at all. There is a campsite nearby and rental boats are also available. It is a great place to stop by on the way back from trekking.

Sukawa Onsen (hot spring) is located on the hillside of Mt. Kurikoma, crossing three prefectures- Iwate, Miyagi, and Akita. It has a long history for more than 300 years since the Edo period, and has long been loved by many fans in the Tohoku area of Japan.

Mt. Kurikoma is at the center of Northern Tohoku area across Akita, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures. The area attracts many mountain climbers who enjoy hiking and mountain climbing for its beautiful lakes, rare alpine plants and dynamic view of high moor.The popular route starts from the Sukawa Onsen trekking start point near the eighth station (at altitude of 1,100 m), and you can begin relaxing trek there. The place is especially attractive in spring for flowers, like the meadow of Nagorigahara. During the blooming season, it is a paradise for alpine plants and visitors can see valuable plants including Eriophorum (cotton grass), Drosera rotundifolia (sundew), Gentiana etc. The short summer is followed by shades like blazing flames in fall.
